How to download a YouTube thumbnail

Four steps. Under 30 seconds. Nothing to install. Works with regular videos, Shorts, Music, and Gaming.

Supports: YouTube, YouTube Music, YouTube Gaming, YouTube Shorts • Drag & drop URLs or upload text files

Create separate QR code for timestamped URLs

    The 4-step walkthrough

    1. 1

      Copy the YouTube URL

Grab the link from the address bar, the Share button, or the YouTube mobile app. Any format works: youtube.com/watch?v=..., youtu.be/..., or /shorts/... links.

    2. 2

      Paste it into MetaClipper

Drop the URL into the tool below. The video ID is detected instantly — no button-hunting, no captcha, no signup.

    3. 3

      Pick your resolution

Choose maxres (1280×720 HD), HQ (480×360), MQ (320×180), or default. If maxres isn't stored for that video, we fall back to the largest size that exists.

    4. 4

      Download or bundle

Save the JPG, copy the direct image URL, grab a QR code, or download the whole ZIP — thumbnail + description + tags + metadata JSON.

    Tips for the best result

    • Use maxres when you can. If the creator uploaded a custom cover, maxres (1280×720) will be available and will look sharp everywhere.
    • Fall back to HQ. If maxres isn't there, hqdefault (480×360) always exists. MetaClipper falls back automatically.
    • Grab the ZIP for research. If you're studying what works — competitive analysis, swipe files — the ZIP includes every size plus title, description, and tags.
    • Use the QR for physical media. Printing a flyer? The QR code sends people straight to the video.
